We're looking for people to help at Crisis Camp London. This is one of several international Crisis Camps organized to support Haiti, and is meeting from 10am - 5pm every Saturday until 27th February

We need more people to help with technical and non-technical tasks including system design, programming, user feedback, working on maps, helping to gather information from around the web into usable forms, keeping the camp running and helping people who are not at the camp to keep in touch with what is going on, and project managing mixed teams of volunteers on short-timescale projects.

Please register for the camp at http://crisiscamphaiti-london.eventbrite.com/.

If you can't make it to the camp, please help us by telling other people about it, or help anytime on the tasks at http://wiki.crisiscommons.org/wiki/Simple_Tasks_Anyone_Can_Do. What we most need is people, but we'd also be grateful if you could use your contacts to help us identify: people in other cities (Cambridge, Glasgow, Munich, Paris etc) who might be willing to organise a CrisisCamp at short notice, potential sponsorship for food, materials etc and companies willing to give us Saturday working space for 100-200 people if we expand beyond the 50-person space that we currently have available.

If you want to know more about CrisisCamp, see the wiki at http://wiki.crisiscommons.org/ - I'm also happy to chat individually about my own experiences with it so far.

Crisis Camp Haiti is Crisis Commons (www.crisiscommons.org) response to the Haiti disaster. It has established a global response by working with NGO's, charities, government agencies, volunteer professionals and the general public to delivering online applications and services to support the relief and rebuilding following a crisis. The current focus is Haiti. A significant feature of this initiative is CrisisCamp events that bring people together to work on the projects and tasks defined as most critical in an open and enabling way. The Crisis Camp London event is happening from 10am - 5pm every Saturday until 27th February at the London Knowledge Lab, 23-29 Emerald Street, London WC1N 3QS. This event, wide covered by the media, will bring together technical and non-technical volunteers and professionals to deliver projects and tasks defined by Crisis Commons and the other international Crisis Camps. More info here: <http://thenextweb.com/uk/2010/01/20/crisis-camp-haiti-londons-tech-communit y-lends-a-hand/> and here: <http://wiki.crisiscommons.org/>

The bottom line from here in the UK is that we have more potential projects on our lists than we have people (especially project managers) to staff them, and we are currently the only CrisisCamp (out of about 30 at the last count) in Europe. There are several things that we can do about this:

  • Tell people about the London camp. People can register for this camp at <http://crisiscamphaiti-london.eventbrite.com/>.
  • Tell people that they can help without going to London. They can tell other people about the camp, and they can help anytime on the tasks listed at<http://wiki.crisiscommons.org/wiki/Simple_Tasks_Anyone_Can_Do>.
  • Help set up more UK camps. We need to identify people in other cities (Cambridge, Glasgow, Munich, Paris etc) who know about barcamps (http://www.barcamp.org) and might be willing to organise a CrisisCamp at short notice. I also have the gleam of an idea to create a virtual camp across <company X> if we can get company buy-in, i.e. get teams of people working 10-5 Saturdays across <company X>: this would a) give <company X> people a chance to help, b) be good for our corporate social responsibility, and c) be a useful exercise in distributed agile projects and connecting people working together across the whole company.
  • Help with resources. We potentially need sponsorship for food, materials etc and companies willing to give the London camp Saturday working space for 100-200 people if we expand beyond the 50-person space that we currently have available.

If anyone wants to contact me about this, I'm happy to chat or respond to emails about my own experiences with CrisisCamp so far.
