Mapping NGOs in Action
From CrisisCommons Wiki
Sahana should be the main repository for organization status and contact info, eg
- http://haiti.sahanafoundation.org/prod/or/office
- http://haiti.sahanafoundation.org/prod/or/organisation
To work with this data, see details at http://haiti.sahanafoundation.org/prod/
Please ask on IRC #sahana irc.freenode.net (http://www.sahana.lk/chat) immediately for authorization. We have adopted an ad-hoc policy of only permitting contributors who make themselves known.
For other ways to help the Sahana work, see:
Most Sahana controllers support RESTful export in various formats: csv, xml, json. Eg:
Organisation Registry DB access:
- http://haiti.sahanafoundation.org/prod/or/organisation.xml
- http://haiti.sahanafoundation.org/prod/or/organisation.json
- http://haiti.sahanafoundation.org/prod/or/organisation.csv
Points of interest (known in Sahana as locations) added to our situation map:
- http://haiti.sahanafoundation.org/prod/gis/location.georss
- http://haiti.sahanafoundation.org/prod/gis/location.kml
Please read over this whole page and try to coordinate with Sahana before replicating the work.

Original Goal & Ideas
At the beginning of the day we sought to deliver some kind of CRM system covering organizations, and the individuals that work for them, that would allow people to connect across organizations. We hit a couple snags, and were not able to deliver this solution in one day. The data on individual organizations acting in Haiti that we consolidated is the best deliverable we were able to compile in one day.
Status: Finding NGOs who deliver Hospital Services
We are just about to go live with the Kapab Medical Situational Awareness tool. The goal is to get all the hospitals operating in Haiti Geotagged and on a map so that everyone can see where the current hospitals are operating, and where there is still a need for medical assistance.
If a city is interested, we need to go through the list of NGOs that are operating in Haiti, and determine which of them is possibly setting up and running hospitals. We want to get a list of them with their contact information so that we can start contacting them to ask if they would put their information into the Kapab system. The Wiki page for the NGOs list is here:
Mapping_NGOs_in_Action
The Spreadsheet is here:
Again, what we are looking for is a list of all NGOs doing medical services in Haiti and their contact information. This might be a relatively small task in terms of going through that spreadsheet, but there may be other NGOs we can identify doing this. Here's another data set:
The Data
We're starting to move all of the entries from the OCHA Contact List with Aid Areas spreadsheet into Sahana. The spreadsheet now has a new field to mark if the data is in Sahana. - Phil.ashlock.us 16:49, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
Since the data is stored in a Google Spreadsheet, it can be programmed against using Google's Spreadsheets APIs, or easily ported to another machine-readable storage system.
Spreadsheet Status
Data sources are:
- Sahana Organization Registry
- InterAction
- Lots of Googling
Many organizations have been completely filled out -- 'x's mark what areas of relief an organization works in. Not all organizations have been researched -- those with some 'x's have. Twitter data & website should be complete for all organizations.
We may in the future be able to get information from Sahana on more organizations, and possibly even individuals based on culling MS Exchange records. A DC team member will update this wiki if that information can be released.
Future work
We foresee a couple ways for this to develop
- A CRM covering both organizations and individuals with structured data about what they're working on, what they need, and what they have to offer. Also, building a CRM that can accept quickly and easily accept user contributions from the general Internet would set it apart from current offerings.
- An application that connects this structured data, offers search functionality, recognizes potential matches of supplies & needs
