Translating OpenStreetMap documentation

A team of GIS & mapping experts are going to Haiti, as part of a World Bank effort, to deliver data and imagery collected through OpenStreetMap and other efforts. The data will be provided to the Haitian government, which does have some GIS capabilities and a GIS unit.

Software will be setup so that the Haitian government can make use of the data. Along with setting up software, the World Bank team will provide training on use of the software and map data.

[edit] What's needed?

There is scattered documentation of some of the OpenStreetMap software, for editing OpenStreetMap, as well as all the back-end software (OpenLayers, PostGIS, Mapnik, ...). For this week (February 13), we can work on translating some key pieces of this documentation.

The end goal is to have documentation and guide materials organized and compiled in a wiki (in English, French, and Creole). With a wiki, the material can be presented in digital format, but also there is PDF export functionality (via a MediaWiki extension) and possibility of producing a hard-copy booklet.

Humanitarian OSM tags

There are subpages for the humanitarian osm tags, which can be translated.

This involves translating the interface for the Potlatch (OSM editor) and the OSM website (the map and other parts of the main OSM site, the history page, ...):

Interface translation is done through translatewiki.net. You need to register for an account, and someone on translate wiki will grant access ASAP.

Some software documentation is on github - http://github.com/filbertkm/mapdocs:

  • PostGIS docs, which are in xml documents - Nothing yet available in French or Kreyol, needs translation
  • OpenLayers docs, which are simply text files (in Sphinx .rst format) - There are some French docs, but appears incomplete; Kreyol would be nice though French is probably sufficient

Katie Filbert (filbertk [at] gmail.com) will be available to grant any access needed for github. Or just save the files and e-mail them to her, or get to her in another way.

As a first step, we would like the OpenStreetMap software (editor and map interface) translated, along with key OSM wiki pages like the Map Features page.

We be working to compile a user guide and documentation, which will be delivered to the Haitian government and their GIS department.

As an end product, this could be made available on a multilingual MediaWiki installation there. In addition, we could make use of the Collections extension for MediaWiki, which allows wiki pages to be organized into "books" and be exported as PDF documents, with possibility of producing hard-copies.
