Virtual workers
From CrisisCommons Wiki
[edit] Can't get to a CrisisCamp? Want to help during the week? Then join the VirtualCrisisCamp
Virtual Campers are people who can't get to a physical CrisisCamp (or are between CrisisCamps), but still want to help. The power of the Internet means that anyone with a computer, Internet access and the will, can work on CrisisCamp Projects. And that means you!
1. Tell us that you're volunteering by registering in the Virtual worker Sign up form
- Say hello to TOHeather User:Heatherleson, or to everyone on the CrisisCommons googlegroup - we'll support you and answer any questions you have about the VirtualCrisisCamp.
2. Look to see what needs doing:
- See Pakistan/2010 Floods/Tasks and Actionable_Tasks
- Uee these handy guides to help you:
- Tools/Open Street Map
- Tools/Ushahidi
- Tools/Sahana
- Tools/Crowdflower
- Tools/PeopleFinder
- Tools/CrisisWiki
- Tools/TweakTheTweet
- Tools/SwiftRiver
- NB Many of these are partner/friend organizations. They have strong communities, and often need beta testers and developers: see the links in Tools
3. Ask what needs to be done
- If you can't see any tasks on the lists, use IRC chat (Chat space information), or see Contacting People at CrisisCamp
4. Talk to each other and tell us what you need
- sign up to the VirtualCrisisCamp Googlegroup
It is possible to contribute from anywhere: please join us!
[edit] CrisisCafes
You don't have to work virtually on your own: why not make virtual working a social event, and get together in your lunchbreak or go to a cafe (with wifi) with some friends.
Sure you'll drink too much coffee, but it's a good way to spend an hour or two, and a few friends getting together could grow into a full-blown camp one day.
London has done this, and it works pretty well.
